Patient information:
Xenical works in your intestines, where it blocks some of the fat you eat from being absorbed. When you take Xenical with meals, Xenical attaches to the lipases (enzymes in the intestinal tract) and blocks them from breaking down some of the fat you have eaten. This undigested fat is then eliminated in your bowel movements. Xenical should be used together with a reduced-calorie diet that your doctor will recommend.
Direction :
The recommended dose is one 120 mg capsule by mouth with liquid at each main meal that contains fat. Take Xenical with a mildly reduced -calorie diet up to 3 times a day or up to one hour after a meal. Because this medication reduces the absorption of fat, taking a multi-vitamin containing fat-soluble vitamins once daily is recommended for proper nutrition.
Side Effects:
Because Xenical works by blocking the absorption of dietary fat, it is likely that you will experience some changes in bowel habits. Side effects include oily spotting, gas with discharge, oily or fatty stools, increased number of bowel movements and inability to control bowel movements. These side effects generally become less common as treatment continues.
Precautions:
Tell your doctor your medical history, including: allergies, digestive disorders (malabsorption or cholestasis), low thyroid function (hypothyroidism), other metabolism problems (e.g., oxalate kidney stones, hyperoxaluria), gall bladder problems, gall stones, pregnant or breast feeding.
Drug interactions:
Inform your Doctor or Pharmacist of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking, especially if you are taking Cyclosporine (Neoral and Sandimmune), Pravastatin (Pravachol) and Warfarin (Coumadin).
